A different perspective.... an outside perspective

Updated: Jan 19, 2019

To this point we only analyzed the perspective of people that are related to the school system. But we need another one to achieve our goal. we need a parental perspective.

So in order to obtain this perspective we decided to create a survey about the school system and apply it to the parents of students from our school. We have randomly chosen a sample of students from 7th to 12th grade and we must say that the results were very interesting.

Do you agree with your learner's workload?

79.1% answered that they agree with their child's workload and 20.9% answered that they disagree. A small part in this issue disagrees with the students' workload, which may reflect concern and mistrust in the system.

Does your student practice any extracurricular activity?

62.7% state that their child practises some extracurricular activity and 37.3% say that they do not. This point is very important since extracurricular activities stimulate other abilities that the school is not able to, promoting the students' confidence, responsibility and self-knowledge. 37.3% is a very worrying figure.

The anxiety of students in moments of evaluation comes from ...

Parents assign responsibility not so much to themselves but to society, to the teacher pressure and to the pressure students create on themselves.

In your opinion, what are the main reasons for students' failure at school?

The results point to lack of study, lack of concentration and study method used, which reveals some lack of interest in encouraging the student to improve these factors.

What disciplines would you suggest to complement your student's background?

"Subjects related to the behavioral area; behavioral skills training that complements the traditional study system and actually prepares them for future challenges. The traditional system is not enough ... I respect what is taught today very much ... but it lacks something else, something different "
"Practical subjects to develop useful day-to-day activities"
"Another foreign language (Mandarin, German, French, Spanish, Italian)"

Do you consider that the Portuguese education system responds to the challenges of the 21st century in terms of student training?

52.2% answered yes and 47.8% answered no, which shows that the national education system is not completely functional in the opinion of some parents.
